Why That Dry Patch Is Still There After You Turned Up the Water

A dry patch reads as a symptom of not enough water, so the natural response is to run the zone longer. Most of the time that spends more water without closing the gap, because the actual cause is where the water is landing, not how much of it there is.

Head-to-head coverage is the design rule being violated

Sprinkler zones are designed so each head's spray reaches the next head — head-to-head coverage. Where a head has drifted, sunk, or was never spaced correctly to begin with, there is a gap between two spray patterns that no amount of run time reaches, because the water simply is not aimed there.

Nozzles matter more than people expect

A nozzle mismatched to its intended throw distance, or a partially clogged one, changes the spray pattern in ways that are hard to see from a distance but leave a very visible dry patch on the ground. Swapping or cleaning the nozzle fixes what more minutes on the timer cannot.

Pressure problems show up as dry patches too

A zone with too many heads for its available pressure, or a leak upstream stealing pressure before it reaches the far end of the line, starves whichever heads are last in line. That end of the zone stays dry no matter how the schedule is set, because the water pressure needed to reach it properly was never there.

Mixed head types on one zone

Spray heads and rotors put water down at very different rates. On a zone that mixes the two, one type finishes applying its water well before the other, so parts of the zone are consistently overwatered while others stay dry — a rate mismatch that a longer run time cannot correct without flooding the fast side.

What actually fixes it

Diagnosing which of these is the real cause, then adjusting spacing, swapping a nozzle, splitting a zone, or addressing a pressure issue, fixes the patch. Turning the clock up is the option that looks free and is not — it raises the water bill while the underlying cause stays exactly where it was.
